Part-Time Lecturer Pool Position

POSITION AVAILABLE: One or more temporary, part-time lecturers to teach Art Studio, Illustration, Design, or/and Art History in Fall Semester 2024, and Spring Semester 2025.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Art offers coursework leading to a B.A. or B.F.A in Art with eleven options: Art History & Visual Studies, Design (general), Fine Art Practice, Graphic Design, Illustration,  Interaction & Game Design, Photography, Studio Arts (general), 3D Art & Design, Transdisciplinary Arts, and Video & Animation. Coursework in this area focuses on the development of students’ perceptual skills, their access to the imagination, and their ability to think critically and independently. The Department of Art also offers coursework leading to an M.A. in Interaction Design and Interactive Arts. Coursework in this area focuses on the creative and technical aspects of new technology to create, control, deliver and present meaningful content in a variety of interactive forms. The Department currently has approximately 500 majors.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: B.A./B.F.A. in Art: To teach web design, interaction design, animation, photography, ceramics, printmaking, painting/drawing, sculpture, introductory and advanced studio courses or computer arts/graphic design. B.A. in Art (Art History Concentration): To teach "Art of Asia and the Pacific World" and "Art of the Transatlantic Modern World," lower-division survey courses that develop writing, reading, and visual literacy skills in the discipline. And to teach History of Graphic Design, a lower-division survey course taught fully online each semester.

M.A. in Interaction Design & Interactive Arts: To teach interactive media development using code, physical computing and 3D printing; concepts of multimedia and interaction design; coursework in application of interaction and learning theories to multimedia design and artistic practice.

All coursework requires one office hour per course per week. Please note that teaching assignments at California State University, East Bay may include courses at the Hayward campus, Concord Center, and/or online. The policy and expectation of the California State University is that all faculty members will perform all of their duties within the state of California.

RANK AND SALARY: Lecturer. Salary is dependent upon educational preparation and experience. Position appointment is subject to budgetary authorization. The salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

Lecturer AY (Range 2) - $5,507 - $6,677

Lecturer AY (Range 3) - $6,221 - $13,224

Lecturer AY (Range 4) - $6,825 - $14,523

Lecturer AY (Range 5) - $8,593 - $15,211

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range, commensurate with education and experience.

DATE OF APPOINTMENT: Fall Semester begins August 19, 2024; Spring Semester begins January 21, 2025.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum qualifications include a suitable Master’s degree in an area of specialization with some college teaching experience.  Teaching classes for the B.A. in Art (Art History Concentration) requires a Ph.D. in Art History or a related field, completed or with dissertation forthcoming, or an M.A. in Art History or a related field with significant teaching experience in Art and/or Design History. We are seeking a lecturer to teach a lower division survey course in History of Graphic Design, with the possibility of developing an upper division topical design history course in the future. Experience with teaching reading and writing skills, and working with Blackboard LMS is particularly valuable; interest or experience with global design histories and/or expanding the design history canon is also desirable. Courses may be offered in online or hybrid formats or at the Hayward campus or Concord Center.

All coursework: candidates may be asked to provide evidence of scholarship, creative work, or teaching via peer-review of teaching student-faculty evaluations; syllabi; course assignments; and samples of student work.
